“Chessboxing is a most fascinating… sport? Performance art? Spectacle?”
Cold open.
We open up looking at a round table, atop which rests a chessboard with two full sets of pieces, and to the side, a single boxing glove.
“The word ‘chessboxing’ existed in the form of a kung fu movie called ‘The Mystery of Chessboxing,’ and of course, because Wu-Tang is Forever, the Wu-Tang Clan did a song with that same title. But the roots of the sport we now know as Chessboxing, came from a French comic book in the early 90’s, and a Dutch artist named Iepe Rubingh took the inspiration from that comic and turned it into the sport we all know and love now.”
The camera begins to pan up, and we see a man sitting by the table. He is dressed in a rather nice suit, but one of his hands is covered in a boxing mitt of its own, the other hand stroking his chin. And at the edge of the table, near his chest, rests a trophy, atop which stands the figure of a boxer in action, facing a king piece, atop a chessboard surrounded by ring ropes.
“Alternating rounds of speed chess and boxing in the same ring. The ultimate test of not only physical toughness and fighting skill, but also of mental acumen, and the ability to control the body’s reactions to the flow of adrenaline. To go from peak PHYSICAL to peak MENTAL readiness in such short intervals… any philosopher would have a field day calling success in this sport ‘mastery of the self.’”
We finally reach the top; the smirking visage of “Checkmate” David Troy, the reigning Gusuku Bowl Champion.
“I don’t know how much I believe all of THAT, but given my success in the sport, I’m coming into the Momiji no Senshi tour with the utmost physical and mental confidence. Not only across the chessboard with Rhythm Saitoh, but also in that big SEKAI Trios tournament.
“Chessboxing and trios matches; two things I’m a bit of a specialist in, so this tour of Japan is right in my wheelhouse!”
David looks at the trophy to his side, and chuckles.
“And that’s bad news for anyone who stands in my way.”
Fade.
