The state-of-the-art Mirai Dome, a gleaming beacon of Tokyo’s advanced technology, played host to Day 1 of the 2024 J1 SUMMIT. Known for its retractable roof, the dome is equipped with LED displays that circled the arena, offering fans an immersive experience. The futuristic venue was packed with 20,000 fans, with the Demon Brigade making their presence felt in the stands. The crowd was buzzing with anticipation as the lights dimmed and a somber moment of remembrance was held for the late Tokyo Zombie, the 2018 J1 SUMMIT winner. His legacy echoed through the arena as fans lit candles, paying tribute to a man whose impact on pro-wrestling still resonates.
Among the crowd were several of the J1 Training Camp coaches, including Mike Musket, Shinjiro Takahashi, and Asuka Mizuki, who watched intently as their students prepared to put their hard work to the test. The night was set to be a showcase of the best MAX-J had to offer, and the atmosphere was electric.
1. Satoshi Kamakura and Takashi Yamashita vs. El Refresco IV and Il Ladro
In the opening tag team match, Satoshi Kamakura and Takashi Yamashita squared off against the colorful lucha duo of El Refresco IV and Il Ladro. The match started with high-paced action, as El Refresco IV showcased his agility, hitting several arm drags and a breathtaking plancha to the outside that sent the crowd into a frenzy. Il Ladro, known for his quick submissions, tried to trap Yamashita in a rolling kneebar, but Yamashita powered out of the hold, using his strength to shift the momentum.
Kamakura brought the match back to his team’s favor with a well-timed back suplex that grounded Il Ladro. From there, Yamashita took control, using his strong-style offense to wear down his opponents. El Refresco IV tried to rally back with a series of springboard attacks, but Yamashita caught him mid-air with a brutal lariat.
As the match neared its conclusion, Yamashita and Kamakura worked together seamlessly, cutting off any hope of a comeback for the lucha duo. In the end, Yamashita delivered his powerful Prosperous Weapon, a sliding D, to El Refresco IV, earning the pinfall victory after 10:05 of intense action. The opening bout set the tone for the night, with Kamakura and Yamashita making a strong statement in front of the packed Mirai Dome.
2. J1 SUMMIT 2024 - BLOCK A: ZENKI vs. Akira Nakamura
The second match of the night saw the imposing ZENKI face off against the technical wizard Akira Nakamura in a Block A contest. Nakamura, known for his grappling skills and quick submissions, tried to ground ZENKI early on. He managed to lock in a tight armbar in the opening minutes, but ZENKI’s power proved too much as he muscled his way out of the hold and slammed Nakamura to the mat with a thunderous spinebuster.
ZENKI quickly took control of the match, using his signature stiff strikes and power moves to keep Nakamura on the defensive. The Demon Brigade faithful cheered as ZENKI delivered brutal soccer kicks to Nakamura's chest, each one landing with a sickening thud. Nakamura, though battered, showed incredible heart, kicking out of several near falls and even managing to lock in a triangle choke that had the crowd on its feet.
However, ZENKI's relentless offense ultimately proved too much. After powering out of the triangle choke, ZENKI hoisted Nakamura up and delivered a devastating Zenki Bomb, slamming him hard into the mat. The referee counted to three as Nakamura lay motionless on the canvas, giving ZENKI the victory after 11:44. The Demon Brigade roared in approval, and ZENKI left the ring with an aura of dominance as he started his J1 SUMMIT journey with an impressive win.
3. J1 SUMMIT 2024 - BLOCK B: AJ Knight vs. Katsuhiko Himura
AJ Knight and Katsuhiko Himura, two of MAX-J's brightest stars, collided in a highly anticipated Block B match. Himura, known for his methodical and technical wrestling style, wasted no time in trying to ground AJ with a series of armbars and joint locks. AJ, however, showcased his ring awareness, quickly maneuvering out of Himura’s attempts to wear him down and responding with a flurry of high-impact moves.
The match flowed back and forth, with Himura repeatedly attempting to trap AJ in submission holds, but AJ's resilience and ability to counter proved crucial. After escaping a cross armbreaker, AJ built momentum, landing a series of suplexes and stiff forearms that left Himura reeling. Himura responded by transitioning to a more defensive strategy, focusing on counters and biding his time.
In the closing moments, Himura attempted a running lariat, but AJ ducked underneath and caught him with a quick counter. With Himura momentarily disoriented, AJ seized the opportunity and delivered his patented Knightfall DDT, planting Himura square in the center of the ring. The referee counted the pinfall at 13:02, giving AJ a crucial win in Block B. AJ left the ring with confidence, showing that he is determined to make his mark in the tournament.
4. J1 SUMMIT 2024 - BLOCK C: Tiger Mask Red vs. Jimmy Winner
In what would become one of the night’s standout matches, Tiger Mask Red faced off against Jimmy Winner in a Block C contest. From the opening bell, it was clear that this was going to be a battle of wills. Tiger Mask Red, a seasoned veteran known for his powerful strikes and suplexes, tried to impose his will early on, but Jimmy Winner showed incredible resilience, countering Tiger Mask's offense with his own blend of Judo and grappling techniques.
The match saw several momentum shifts, with Tiger Mask Red delivering stiff chops and neck strikes, only for Jimmy to respond with a series of beautifully executed throws. Jimmy managed to keep up with the veteran, even catching him off-guard with a flying armbar that had the crowd buzzing. Despite his best efforts, though, Jimmy couldn’t maintain control for long, as Tiger Mask Red powered out of the submission and hit a vicious lariat that sent Jimmy sprawling.
The final moments of the match saw both men exhausted, but it was Tiger Mask Red who managed to dig deep. After avoiding a suplex attempt from Jimmy, Tiger Mask Red hoisted his opponent up and delivered a brutal Tiger Driver '91, slamming him into the mat with authority. The pinfall came at 21:33, earning Tiger Mask Red a hard-fought victory. Despite the loss, Jimmy Winner left the ring with a newfound confidence, knowing that he had pushed one of the best in the business to his limits.
At the midpoint of the show, fans were treated to a humorous advertisement for “Kojo-Kun Instant Rice,” Japan’s fastest-cooking rice, with a guarantee of steaming hot rice in just 30 seconds! “For the busy samurai on the go, Kojo-Kun Instant Rice gives you the energy to fight through your day – and your opponent!” The commercial, featuring exaggerated martial arts moves while preparing rice, drew a big laugh from the crowd.
5. J1 SUMMIT 2024 - BLOCK D: Hayato Hamada vs. David Troy
As the match progressed, it became a battle of attrition, with both men trading holds and reversals. Hamada nearly secured victory after hitting a spinning back kick that dropped Troy, but Troy managed to kick out just before the three-count. The back-and-forth nature of the match had the crowd on the edge of their seats, with neither man able to gain a decisive advantage.
In the end, it was Troy’s ring awareness that made the difference. After narrowly escaping a brainbuster attempt from Hamada, Troy rolled through and caught his opponent in a quick backslide pin. The referee counted to three, giving Troy the victory after 14:21. Hamada was visibly frustrated, but Troy extended a hand in respect after the match, showing that despite the hard-fought battle, there was mutual admiration between the two competitors.
6. J1 SUMMIT 2024 - BLOCK A: NEXUS vs. Eiichiro Yamazaki
Eiichiro Yamazaki and NEXUS clashed in a battle of strength versus precision in their Block A contest. NEXUS, a cybernetic being known for his calculated, strategic approach to wrestling, tried to neutralize Yamazaki’s power advantage by targeting his legs with quick kicks and submissions. However, Yamazaki’s sheer strength allowed him to fend off NEXUS’s attacks and keep the pressure on his robotic opponent.
The match saw NEXUS repeatedly attempt to take Yamazaki to the mat, but Yamazaki’s size and power made it difficult for the cybernetic fighter to keep him grounded. Yamazaki used his weight to his advantage, wearing down NEXUS with heavy strikes and slams. Despite NEXUS’s best efforts to turn the match into a technical affair, Yamazaki's brute force proved to be the deciding factor.
In the final moments, Yamazaki caught NEXUS with a massive powerbomb that shook the ring. NEXUS struggled to recover, but the impact was too much for even his advanced programming to overcome. The referee counted the pinfall at 10:57, giving Yamazaki a dominant win in Block A. As Yamazaki left the ring, the fans applauded his impressive display of power, while NEXUS recalibrated on the outside, already analyzing what went wrong in preparation for his next match.
7. J1 SUMMIT 2024 - BLOCK B: Thunder Mask vs. Rhythm Saitoh
The next match in Block B saw the legendary Thunder Mask face off against Rhythm Saitoh in a contest that blended traditional wrestling with high-flying excitement. Thunder Mask, known for his strong-style offense and judo background, looked to ground Saitoh early, using his experience to dictate the pace of the match. Saitoh, however, was no pushover, and he quickly turned the match into a fast-paced affair, using his quickness and improvisational wrestling style to keep Thunder Mask on his toes.
The match featured a mix of hard-hitting strikes from Thunder Mask and fluid counters from Saitoh. At one point, Saitoh managed to trap Thunder Mask in an abdominal stretch, showing his versatility in the ring. However, Thunder Mask powered out of the hold and hit a series of devastating judo throws that sent Saitoh crashing to the mat. Saitoh showed resilience, kicking out after a near fall and attempting to rally back with a flying forearm smash.
In the closing moments, Thunder Mask’s experience proved to be the difference. After catching Saitoh mid-air during an attempted crossbody, Thunder Mask lifted him up and delivered his signature Thunder MAX Driver, a thunderous powerbomb that left Saitoh motionless on the canvas. The referee counted to three at 12:54, awarding Thunder Mask the victory in an impressive display of power and technique. As he left the ring, Thunder Mask received a standing ovation from the crowd, while Saitoh earned the respect of the fans for his valiant effort.
8. J1 SUMMIT 2024 - BLOCK C: Ryan Samuels vs. METAL HERO
Ryan Samuels, the towering “Midwest Nightmare,” stepped into the ring to face METAL HERO in a highly anticipated Block C matchup. METAL HERO, known for his cold, machine-like offense, entered the match with a heavily bandaged knee, raising questions about his condition. Samuels, on the other hand, looked focused and ready to inflict punishment, his eyes locked on his opponent from the moment the bell rang.
The match began with METAL HERO trying to keep Samuels at bay with stiff kicks and calculated strikes. Despite his valiant effort, it was clear that METAL HERO's injured knee was affecting his mobility. Samuels quickly capitalized on this, targeting the weakened limb with brutal stomps and knee strikes. The relentless cowboy from Kansas showed no mercy, driving METAL HERO into the corner and delivering a flurry of punches that left him dazed.
As the match progressed, Samuels became more aggressive, hitting a series of powerful slams that further weakened METAL HERO. With the crowd sensing the end, Samuels hit his first lariat, knocking METAL HERO down with authority. Not satisfied, Samuels pulled METAL HERO to his feet and hit another lariat. Then another. And then a fourth! By this point, METAL HERO was barely conscious, his body crumpling to the mat after each devastating blow. The referee stepped in, declaring a stoppage at 15:29 as METAL HERO was unable to stand and lying in a crumpled heap. Samuels celebrated his dominant victory as the crowd buzzed with excitement, while METAL HERO was helped out of the ring by medical staff, his condition uncertain.
9. J1 SUMMIT 2024 - BLOCK D: Alexander Irvine vs. Earth Warrior
The final match of the night featured the ruthless Alexander Irvine taking on Earth Warrior in a Block D contest. Irvine, known for his MMA background and vicious striking, immediately took control of the match, using his superior stand-up game to keep Earth Warrior on the defensive. Earth Warrior, a fighter with a deep sense of purpose, tried to counter Irvine’s relentless offense with his own brand of high-energy attacks and quick submissions.
The match saw Earth Warrior land several impressive aerial moves, including a diving elbow drop that nearly secured him a victory. However, Irvine’s experience and resilience allowed him to weather the storm, and he gradually wore Earth Warrior down with precise strikes and submission attempts. A liver shot from Irvine visibly staggered Earth Warrior, giving Irvine the opening he needed to capitalize.
With Earth Warrior dazed, Irvine executed his Flawless Plex, a picture-perfect Fisherman’s Suplex that sent Earth Warrior crashing to the mat. The referee counted to three at 11:38, awarding Irvine the victory in a hard-fought match. Irvine left the ring with a smirk, confident in his performance, while Earth Warrior exited with his head held high, knowing he had pushed one of the toughest competitors in Block D to his limits.
POST-SHOW FALLOUT
The first day of the J1 SUMMIT delivered action-packed matches and intense competition, setting the stage for an exciting start with some great performances. However, it seemed that Demon Lord ZENKI was none too pleased with the performance of his fellow Japanese wrestlers. As he left the arena, he publicly rebuked the performance of METAL HERO for losing to Ryan Samuels, Katsuhiko Himura losing to AJ Knight, Earth Warrior losing to Alexander Irvine, and even his own Demon Brigade stablemate Hayato Hamada losing to David Troy. Despite the fact that this year there is no formal native Japanese vs. foreign wrestler division of the matches, he reportedly said something to the effect of, "Japanese fighters must show more fighting spirit! Otherwise it will be 1853 all over again!" referring to the arrival of U.S. Commodore Perry's arrival in Japan and the Meiji Revolution that overthrew the Tokugawa Shogunate a little more than a decade following.
Many Japanese pundits are saying that Ryan Samuels might just be the hottest commodity in pro-wrestling. After his massive upset of Battleship Hirata in OCW and tonight enjoying one of the most dominating performances we've seen over METAL HERO, a MAX-J legend (who also could not be reached for comment after the show). Some in the Japanese press have been referring to Samuels - native of Tribune, Kansas - as the "Typhoon from Tribune", reflecting his massive size that he employs with enough speed that creates a catastrophic level of momentum for opponents.

PREVIEW OF DAY 2
As a reminder, all of Day 2 will feature the sport form rule set. As a reminder:
The "sport form" rules emphasize the shoot-style elements of pro-wrestling and differ from traditional pro-wrestling rules in the following manner:
- Each match is fought over a maximum of three (3) five-minute rounds.
- Each fighter must have a corner-man accompany him to the ring.
- Fighters cannot excessively utilize the ropes (e.g., use them to climb or launch aerial attacks)
- Within-round decision are rendered by submission, referee stoppage/Technical Knockout (TKO), or corner stoppage. If a decision is not reached within the time-limit of the match, the decision will be rendered by a panel of three judges.
- The only strikes that are legal are open-hand strikes and kicks with the top of the foot (meaning that elbows and knees are banned).
- Fighters must wear kickpads that cover their legs from below the knee. Fighters do not wear gloves.

There are several interesting stories going into Day 2.
- Tiger Mask Red vs METAL HERO in Block C has massive appeal, not only due to the stature of the two fighters, but also the fact that after HERO's performance this evening, no one is quite sure what to expect from him.
- Katsuhiko Himura vs. Thunder Mask will represent a student vs. teacher showdown. These two fought in several matches over the GPWS Jr. Heavyweight title several years ago and the results here will likely have major implications in Block B.
- By far the match getting the most attention is the main event when Demon Lord ZENKI will square off against Eiichiro Yamazaki. Yamazaki, also known as Mushigahara, was responsible for dethroning ZENKI as the MAX Heavyweight Champion during the TOUKON ROAD super-tour's event in New Delhi, India. This will be the first time that the two men have met in the ring in singles competition since that match. ZENKI, regarded by many as the strongest junior heavyweight fighter in the world, will be up against no slouch in Yamazaki, and has promised to avenge his loss from nearly half a decade ago.
