Sam Hewitt and AJ sit face to face in the Pollo Studio, AJ wearing his trademark smirk and Hewitt with an expression indicating he’s not happy to talk to AJ, but a job is a job.
“Ladies and gentlemen, my guest at this time, embroiled as always in controversy, AJ Knight.”
AJ waves at the camera.
“Not sugar-coating things, are we Sam? That’s alright, let’s cut the bullshit and get down to brass tacks. You want to ask about the Captain's fall match, right?”
“More particularly, the incident with Matt Pulver and his injury during the match, which you helped cause.”
“Accidentally.”
“Many people aren’t quite so sure about that.”
AJ rolls his eyes, with a bit of a chuckle.
“Would you be one of those people Sam?”
Hewitt looks a little nervous. AJ looks at him intently, clearly not about to say another word until he gets an answer.
“Well given your recent behavior-”
AJ raises a finger, cutting him off.
“Recent behavior? What recent behavior are we talking about here?”
Sam looks at AJ with a touch of confusion.
“It’s no secret you’ve had something of a vendetta against Matt for the last year now.”
AJ leans back in his chair.
“You answered your own question there, Sambo. It’s no secret. I’ve been very open about my feelings towards that fraud. So if I was trying to hurt Matt, then the real question is why wouldn’t I just shove his dumb ass off the top rope? Why would I bother making this whole big production of struggling with Orville to make it happen? If Matt didn’t learn his lesson about climbing the top rope after the last time, that’s not my fault.”
Sam Hewitt is undeterred by Knight’s miniature tirade.
“Well one person who is also unsure is one Orville Newton, who seems sure you went out of your way to injure Matt.”
AJ’s demeanor grows a bit more serious as he measures his next words carefully.
“Sam, I like Orville. I think he’s a great kid, he’s bright, he’s got a great future ahead of him. But he’s also young, naive and very impressionable, so if you look at the influences in his life there’s no question about where he got that opinion from.”
Sam gives AJ a rather stern look, incredulous at the implications of AJ’s words.
“You can’t be implying that Matt Pulver is a poor influence on Orville Newton.”
AJ taps his nose, indicating he’s correct.
“Let’s be clear, Matt’s been a big help in improving Orville’s in ring skills but otherwise I think he’s tanking the kid. Matt can teach people to wrestle just fine. But he can’t teach people how to win. He can’t teach people how to win because he never had to learn how to win. Matt’s a natural. When I trained with him I remember he couldn’t explain what he was doing for shit. He just knew. Matt knows holds and counters and moves, and he can teach them to you. But holds alone don’t win matches.”
“And you think you could teach him to win?”
AJ nods.
“I’m not a natural Sam. I’m not particularly big, or strong, I’m not a natural athlete, I’m damn sure not the toughest guy in the business, I’m not even the best technician. By all rights, I should have just been another mid-carder doomed to languish in obscurity. But I’m a former World Heavyweight Champion multiple times over. I’ve beaten pretty much everybody I’ve ever faced. Because I learned to use what I have. Because I’m smart. Because I know how to win, because I’m resourceful. I can teach him because I had to learn it the hard way.”
Sam Hewitt looks skeptical of AJ’s motives here.
“You would understand how people might question your intentions in doing so, right? After all, given how you’ve spent the better part of a year doing everything in your power to tear Matt Pulver down at every opportunity. Is it unreasonable to expect you might want to do the same here?”
AJ laughs bitterly.
“It’s always the same with you people, you know that? No matter what I do, or what I say I can never get a fair shake with you, because corporate’s already made up your minds for you. Duke Womack’s already made up your mind for you.”
Sam looks confused.
“What are you talking about?”
“Playing dumb? Fine, let’s lay our cards out on the table, shall we?”
