We open to all eight fighters standing inside the ring. Darkness Tigre, Azalo, Jin Hirai and Sangre de Pollo stand on the left, while a large trophy and a lovely display of flowers accompany a portrait of the late El Hijo de Pollo. On the right side, Chupacabra Jr, Matt Pulver, MEZA and AJ Knight. All eight men stand with their heads bowed and the fans quiet down as the bell tolls ten times. After the tenth, the fans roar to life with a "HIJO!" chant and several of the fighters raise their arms to encourage the chant... a notable exception being Darkness Tigre, who stands with his hands on his hips shaking his head. As the eight men exit the ring, Super Pollo enters and accepts a microphone from Mason Marvelle.

SUPER POLLO

Tonight is a very special night. Tonight is our second annual Hijo Invitational, meant to honour this man right here...

SUPER POLLO

Say what you will about him and many have, many will... but this troubled soul was like a brother to me. We came from different backgrounds, entirely different ways of life... but we bonded immediately upon meeting. It was the decision of this man and his real brother, Black Pollo V to give me this mask, to bestow the Super Pollo name upon me... and that meant the whole world to me. That is why I continue to wear this today, despite not having competed in five years or so. Pollo Road is my way of giving back to a man that gave so much to me and gave his life to this sport. Hijo, I love you.

Soup bows his head and hands the mic off as the fans roar back to life with HIJO chants. Soup looks up and nods before exiting the ring.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

First Round

Darkness Tigre vs. Chupacabra Jr

1 Fall - 15 Minute Time Limit

"Sick, Sick, Sick" by Queens of the Stone Age is playing as we return from break. A wide shot of the ring shows Darkness Tigre walking around the outside, jawing with any fans who dare speak to him. He grabs a Hijo sign and tears it up as his walkout music transitions into "Chupacabra" by Randy Rogers Band and La Maquinaria Nortena. The 5'2" Chupacabra Jr storms out from the back, slides into the ring and leaps right over the top rope onto Darkness Tigre! The crowd is molten hot, breaking into "CHUPA! CHUPA! CHUPA!" chants. Referee Gideon Dube rushes out and checks on both men, but Chupacabra gets back on his feet and slides into the ring. Tigre is a little more unsteady, definitely reeling from the early attack but manages to find his footing and grabs the bottom rope, hauling himself inside the ring.

SAM HEWITT

Fans, I do apologize we haven't had a chance to formally welcome you to the Hijo Invitational but as you can see on your screen - it's kicked off quickly! I'm Sam Hewitt joined as always by Brian Shelzi, the Purebred and those two men inside the ring are guests for this evening's tournament. The smaller one, standing at 5'2" is Puerto Rico's Chupacabra Jr while the man attempting to return to a vertical base is Darkness Tigre, a well travelled veteran of the squared circle. One of these two men will be advancing to the semi final where they'll get an interesting scenario.

BRIAN SHELZI

That's right, Sambo. The cruiserweight title will be up for grabs three times tonight, but there could be very well three different champions before the night is over. AJ Knight is walking in here with the strap and he'll be up against Jin Hirai in just a little bit, with the winner of that bout meeting the winner of this one. On the other side of the bracket, MEZA will battle Azalo while Matt Pulver takes on Sangre de Pollo. Whoever wins the tournament tonight is not only going home with that absurdly large trophy we saw at the top of the program, but also the cruiserweight belt and a cheque for $100,000!

Chupa walks over and grabs Tigre as he's getting up to his knees, lifts him sideways and drops him on the mat! Not quite a body slam, but certainly enough to do the trick. Chupa steps over Tigre and steps onto the bottom rope, but Tigre grabs him by the ankle and hauls him down - sending him falling into the middle of the ring! Tigre rises to his feet for the first time inside the ring and lunges at Chupacabra who leaps over Tigre, then leaps onto the second rope and flies backwards into a crossbody! Tigre catches him and immediately drives him down across his knee with a backbreaker! Chupa groans in pain as does Tigre, but Darkness' pain seems to frustrate him - as he storms over to Chupacabra Jr and grabs him, nearly chucking him across the ring with an explosive snap suplex! Shelzi points out that you're going to be used to more resistance when you're competing against larger opponents, but Chupa's size makes that suplex a lot more impactful. Tigre grabs him again and executes another one, but hangs on this time, rotates his hips and bangs Chupacabra's body into the mat with a third amigo! The crowd boos as he gets up and taunts them, backs into the rope and hits a knee drop! He keeps his knee on the head/neck and a hand on the chest to cover...

2-NO!

Tigre questions Dube's count while Hewitt wonders what he expected with such a lackadaisical cover. Tigre gets up and jaws at some fans some more, telling them it's all over for the little boy! He grabs Chupacabra Jr up and lifts him into another suplex but shows off his strength by keeping Chupa upside down for a solid forty seconds, even throwing in some squats to show off. Finally Tigre brings him down with a neckbreaker, the DT Bomb '07 as Shelzi calls it. Tigre sits up and laughs as the fans boo him, then crawls over to Chupacabra and makes a sensible cover, even hooking the leg this time.

3-NO!

Tigre isn't giving Dube any shit this time, but his look says it all. Tigre rolls Chupa onto his stomach, grabs him in a rear waist hold and hauls him up... places him on the top turnbuckle. Chupa's balance is off, so he falls backwards a couple times forcing Tigre to readjust him. Tigre climbs onto the second rope, puts his head underneath Chupa's arm... but the Puerto Rican bashes his head into the top turnbuckle! Chupa readjusts himself...

AVALANCHE STYLE HURRACABRA!

The poisonrana from the top rope! Both men go hard into the canvas, but the worst of the two is Darkness Tigre! Chupa uses the fact that his legs are still underneath Tigre to aid him, rolling him onto his back and grabbing his leg!

"Chupacabra" starts back up as the smallest man in the tournament falls onto his back.

SAM HEWITT

It was a hard earned win, but his victory nets him the longest break in the tournament so he'll have plenty of time to recuperate for his title match in the semi final round.

Chupa rolls out to the floor, getting mauled by some of his Puerto Rican associates that made the trip. Meanwhile Darkness Tigre groggily gets to his feet and shoves Dube, who shoves him back! Tigre falls on his rear end to another pop from the crowd, just adding insult to injury for a ruined evening.

First Round - PMLL Cruiserweight Title

AJ Knight defends vs. Jin Hirai

1 Fall - 15 Minute Time Limit

We come back from break as Mason Marvelle finishes his intro and exits the ring. The bell sounds and AJ Knight and Jin Hirai circle around from one another, then lock-up. AJ does a quick go behind, but Hirai counters that just as quickly. AJ grabs an arm and pulls himself free before wringing it, but Hirai rolls through and reverses the wring on AJ! The champion drops to a knee but is forced to stand back up as Hirai transitions into a hammerlock, AJ fakes Hirai out with a snapmare attempt and counters into a full nelson. The height difference makes this an especially effective hold, but AJ doesn't keep it in - he spins it out into a snapmare. He tries to apply a rear chinlock, but Hirai slips out immediately and forces AJ to the mat with a hammerlock! Hirai uses a couple knees to drive into AJ's arm, forcing the champion to try and escape. The champion does, but Hirai is on him immediately with a lucha-style takedown. Hirai hits the ropes and responds to AJ's trip attempt on the drop down by stomping him, then rolling forward and bouncing off the ropes. AJ gets up and eats a front dropkick!

BRIAN SHELZI
I have all the respect in the world for AJ Knight's attempt here tonight to defend the title three times in one evening, but the problem he's going to run into is that someone like Jin Hirai who's on the other side of his career. He's not washed up, don't get me wrong... but he's past his prime. Injuries piled up from his high-flying days, so he's pretty well content with his role as a leader to the locker room... or his students at least. However, I think you'll see the ZERO-G play some of the classics in this bout.

SAM HEWITT

A very comparable bout would be last June's title bout between Dorado, now Pulver and Lynx. It was a best of three falls match, but the odds did not favour Lynx scoring a fall in that match at all... but he did, and he very nearly won two. Don't discredit these veteran fighters, they aren't going hard every night anymore so they can definitely find enough fuel to push the pedal down when needed.

With AJ in a seated position, Hirai bounds off the ropes and tries again with the front dropkick but AJ leans back and avoids it, then grabs Hirai's leg and drives his shoulder against the back of the knee while pressuring the thigh with his grip. AJ gets up to his feet and pivots to the centre of the ring, pulling Hirai away from the ropes. He releases his grip on Hirai's leg, but plants his foot on the inside of his thigh and executes a kneebreaker, Billy Robinson style. Hirai howls in pain as AJ gets up, unbothered and finishes pulling Hirai to his feet by his dreadlocks. Hirai swings wildly, but AJ ducks and grabs him in a rear waist hold... he lifts him up, but fakes the ZERO-G out - instead of executing an atomic drop, he just chucks Hirai back on his feet and Hirai's leg buckles out from underneath him. AJ backs off as referee Tubby Thomas checks Hirai out, but Jin tells Tubby he's good! He refuses to give up! The crowd responds in kind with chants of "JIN! JIN! JIN!" as AJ lays across the turnbuckle waiting to proceed.

BRIAN SHELZI

I don't like this for AJ, the champion should've slapped on a submission and finished that leg off.

AJ and Hirai are instructed to resume the match as Hirai gets up. They circle around and Hirai fakes AJ out, grabbing his arm and executing a Japanese arm drag! AJ goes down and Hirai speeds into the ropes, handspringing against them before backflipping into a back elbow smash! He clocks AJ with it nicely as he returns to his feet, Hirai contorting his body to land on his hip rather than his bad leg. Hirai rolls to the apron and fights his leg, battling to his feet and up the turnbuckle...

SOMERSAULT LEG DROP WITH THE BAD WHEEL!

Hirai cries out in pain unable to follow up, AJ instinctively rolls away from Hirai who slaps the mat in pain and forces himself to rush across the ring and throw himself on AJ, hooking the leg!

2-NO!

Hirai rolls off, dejectedly. AJ seeks refuge on the bottom rope, then turns over with his back to the bottom turnbuckle... the crowd roars, alerting Hirai who plays to the crowd with a simple back and forth glance, then somersaults to his feet. He hops in place as he prepares for the Bronco Buster, but as he charges in, AJ gets up and wallops him with a superkick! The crowd boos as Hirai crumples to the mat and AJ makes a cover!

NO!

The fans' jeers turn to cheers, but AJ isn't interested in a comeback special. He grabs Hirai by the arm and twists him into a hammerlock... then goes for the DDT portion, only to be driven into the corner turnbuckles. Hirai's arm is freed, so he does it a second time, then a third. AJ doubles over, stumbles out and falls to his knees. As he's getting back up, Hirai hits him with a corkscrew heel kick! He covers!

3-NO!

Hirai shakes his head, his dreads swinging wildly as he pulls the champion back up. He drops into a split, striking Knight in the bread basket with a palm thrust! The champion heaves loudly as Hirai rolls backwards, hits the ropes and leaps over AJ for a sunset flip!

-AJ claps his legs against Hirai's head and does a back roll of his own, standing up and grabbing the bad leg...

SINGLE LEG CRAB!

The crowd cries out, trying to will Hirai on... but ZERO-G taps out! AJ drops to his knees after Thomas raises his arm, then collects his belt and rolls out. Jeremy Squire and Crazy Boy pass him in the aisle, rushing down to their teammate's aid. Dr. Pierson is already inside the ring checking on Hirai, who resists the immediate attention and his teammates' help... standing up on his own. The crowd roars with chants of "JIN!" as AJ Knight turns back to look at the scene.

SAM HEWITT

So our first semi final bout is set... AJ Knight will defend vs. Chupacabra Jr! We've got Matt Pulver vs. Sangre de Pollo on deck, so don't go away!

Sangre de Pollo vs. Matt Pulver
1 Fall - 15 Minute Time Limit

MASON MARVELLE

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a first round bout in the Hijo Invitational! It is to be fought over a fifteen minute time limit with one fall, one submission or a knockout to decide the winner! Introducing first from southeastern Mexico! He weighed in this morning at one hundred and eighty one pounds... SANGRE DE POLLO!

Pollo sneers as the crowd gives him a mixed reaction.

MASON MARVELLE

His opponent from Leksand, Sweden! He weighed in this morning at one hundred and ninety seven pounds... MATT PULVER!

Pulver gets a good reaction, a few noticeable boos.

MASON MARVELLE
Your referee for this bout is Gideon Dube!

Before the bell sounds, Sangre de Pollo approaches the center of the ring and offers his hand. Matt Pulver looks around, but approaches cautiously and extends his hand. Sangre's handshake is firm, but quickly shown to be a ruse as Sangre uses it to pull Pulver into a head kick! Pulver goes down, but Sangre grabs him and slaps on the Chicken Choke - a Dragon sleeper! Sangre locks in the bodyscissors and Pulver extends his arms, trying to figure out where he is in the ring. The crowd chants for Pulver, who swings his leg and rotates clockwise - draping his foot over the bottom rope.

SAM HEWITT

A quick escape, but how hurt is Matt Pulver after that cheap shot?

BRIAN SHELZI

The name of the game is be hit and hit back, Sambo, you can't expect everyone offering a handshake to be as respectful as they seem... especially someone like Sangre, who's been showing some different sides of himself lately.

The action restarts back on their feet. Sangre steps forward and cracks Pulver with an elbow strike, battering him with a few more before turning and bouncing off the ropes. Pulver is reeling, but ducks the incoming shot and pivots, dropkicking the knee of Sangre and bringing him to the mat in a hurry! Pulver scurries back to his feet and grabs the leg, applying a standing toe hold. Pulver reaches down to grab the other leg, but Sangre cracks him with a kick!

PULVER FALLS BACK!

GIBSON LEGLOCK?!

BRIAN SHELZI

I think Sangre de Pollo's kick just punched Pulver's ticket to the second round!

Indeed, the commentators recap the replay and as Pulver reaches down for the leg to complete the figure four - Sangre's foot comes up and smacks him underneath the jaw. Pulver falls back and traps Sangre underneath him for the three. Pulver rolls out of the ring, clearly a little dazed from two good kicks at the hands of Sangre. Dr. Pierson walks over to check on him, but Sangre de Pollo grabs Pulver and throws him back inside the ring. Sangre grabs a chair and heads back inside, but Ultimo Pollo IV dashes into the ring and pleads with Sangre to stop! Sangre grabs the chair and yells at Ultimo to move, but Ultimo refuses and once again tells Sangre to put the chair down! Ultimo says something else, which incites Sangre more! "HE IS NO POLLO!" and Ultimo shoves his partner in response, asking him repeatedly "ARE WE?!" Ultimo gets no answer, so decides to turn around and check on Pulver himself. Sangre moves from the corner and lifts the chair above his head...

AND THROWS IT DOWN!

Some Spanish curse words are thrown around as Sangre exits the ring, leaving Ultimo staring at his partner as he exits.

SAM HEWITT

The issues continue between Sangre and Ultimo Pollo, who have not been on the same page in recent months. Nevertheless, Matt Pulver picks up a quick win with a big cost because he got rocked twice in that short bout and given his history... he's going to have to go through some intensive protocols before the second round match. We may just have to use an alternate for him.

BRIAN SHELZI

Let's take a quick break and come back to MEZA and Azalo, see who may be meeting him in the second round.

First Round
MEZA vs. Azalo
1 Fall - 15 Minute Time Limit

MASON MARVELLE

---from the Well of Despair! He weighs in at one hundred and ninety three pounds... AZALO!

Lotte emerges from the back with her hound on a leash, earning some pleas from some men in the crowd to do the same to them. "Only in your dreams!" is her reply as she unleashes Azalo. The hound crawls on all fours to the steps as Lotte points to MEZA, shouting something inaudible to the home viewing audience at him. MEZA can't hide his distaste, but shakes his head and looks up as if he's seeking guidance f--Azalo rushes him with a knee to the gut! MEZA falls to the mat and Azalo stomps on him, sending him out to the arena floor. "KEEP ATTACKING!" shouts Lotte, but it only earns echoes from Azalo who decides he's going to try a suicide dive! Azalo bounces off the opposite ropes and goes to dive through the middle and top, but MEZA grabs a hold of him and yanks him down to the floor, pummelling him with knees to the chest! MEZA looks around, then decides he's going to climb onto the apron and grabs the top rope... he measures the distance behind him, but can't find Azalo! Azalo reappears from under the ring and grabs hold of MEZA's leg, biting it! MEZA dumps himself over the middle rope, falling back inside the ring and escaping from the bite! Referee Tubby Thomas issues a yellow card and officially calls for the bell.

SAM HEWITT

Interesting to note that our general manager Duke Womack sent notice prior to the night's matches that yellow cards would carry through the evening. So, Azalo already has one strike against him and the opening bell to a first of potential three matches has already begun.

MEZA rubs the bite mark area on his leg and ignores Thomas' request to stay back, grabbing Azalo as he emerges through the middle and bottom ropes. MEZA executes a flying mare and kicks him in the back, straightening up the Shattered Diamond in a hurry! MEZA flattens him out on his stomach and quickly applies an inverted Indian deathlock, bridging over to apply a facelock and complete the Muta Lock! MEZA quickly releases the facelock and again rubs his bite mark, as Azalo's leg was putting pressure on the afflicted area. MEZA reaches behind and slaps Azalo's sides, drawing back an arm... and does it with the other side, multiple times as Azalo now knows what his intentions are with one arm already restrained. MEZA gets it, then rolls onto his back - pinning Azalo's shoulders to the mat in the process!

3-NO!

Both men come away from the hold clutching their leg, but MEZA gets up and fires a stiff kick into Azalo's leg as he lays on the mat. MEZA grabs the leg he just attacked and pulls him into the middle of the ring, applying a single leg lock all the while staring Lotte down! Lotte gets a few laughs by telling MEZA that she is a happily married woman, but the youngster responds in Spanish and some of the crowd ooohs in response! Lotte turns to the crowd demanding to know what was said, but her attention is refocused as Azalo yells out "DO YOU GIVE UP!?" repeatedly after Thomas asks him. MEZA senses that the submission isn't going to win, so he releases the hold but not before kicking Azalo with his free leg. MEZA gets up, but sees the situation in front of him and backs up into the corner turnbuckles, climbs onto the second rope and leaps off aiming for the targeted leg of Azalo! Azalo rolls out of the way and MEZA lands on his own knees hard, the Herkman grabs MEZA and executes a quick but low spinning neckbreaker and makes a quick cover!

NO!

Azalo pulls MEZA up into a seated position and begins bombarding him with strikes - elbows mostly, but as MEZA tries to find an escape some knees come into play as well. Azalo pulls him up to his feet and knees him a couple times as he backs him into the ropes, "OFF THE ROPES" begins being echoed as MEZA is shot into the opposite set. Azalo doubles over, but MEZA rolls over his back and twirls Azalo around. He charges forth, hitting the middle rope...

COFFIN SPLAS-NO!

Azalo catches him in a rear waist hold and German suplex him! And holds it!

...

3-NO! The crowd gasps and then stomps their feet in celebration as Thomas assures them that MEZA is still alive in this tournament with two fingers held up! Azalo shouts "TWO!" as he pulls MEZA close to the ropes and climbs up on the turnbuckles. Azalo leaps off with a shooting star press...

NO ONE HOME!

Azalo hits hard and stands right back up, MEZA spins him around and tries to backslide him after hooking his arms, but Azalo fights it! MEZA changes levels, dropping to his knees and then stands right back up - planting Azalo into the mat with the Crucifijo Bomb! He holds the pin!

MEZA rolls off and breathes a sigh of relief, but Nizbel slides in and tries to attack... but MEZA slips out as Nizbel lunges against the middle rope, hissing and drooling.

SAM HEWITT

A great win for MEZA, but this issue with Kalidah and his hounds still looms over his head.

Nizbel tries to continue after MEZA as the winner advances up the aisle, but Lotte calls her hound off. Nizbel comes back, obviously disappointed but earns a pat on the head for his obedience. Azalo is scolded in turn.

Before the next match can begin, matchmaker Duke Womack storms out to the commentary table.

DUKE WOMACK
Men, we got a problem.

Hewitt and Shelzi both look puzzled.

DUKE WOMACK
There was some kind of mix up with the flights. I don't know specifics, but the champs ain't here.

The crowd boos, but those boos turn to cheers as the Punch Line all converge at the desk. Vezina jostles Womack with his hockey stick.

ROY VEZINA

Mr. Womack, looking quite fresh this evening. Where are the champs? My boys and I are ready for the puck to drop! Game on!

DUKE WOMACK

I know your ears work. They ain't here. Is this one your doing too?

Vezina's look is one of a mischievous smile and a "how dare you!"

ROY VEZINA
Mr. Womack, my fellow bros and I would never, ever, do such a thing. It’s not our fault that those J-MAX nobros are a bunch of dusters and didn’t show up.

DUKE WOMACK
Unless you want to fight each other, I guess you got the night off...

ROY VEZINA
Listen, Duke Caboom. I’m sure there are some solid men of honor and integrity out back that would love to come on down to the barn and throw down with us. This is a place of honor and integrity, eh? We'll put the Thunder in Thunder Bay!

The crowd pops, mandatory cheap pop.

ROY VEZINA
I mean if there is really no one with enough… biscuits to face us, I guess my bros and I should… just be named the winners and take our belts on the way out, eh?

DUKE WOMACK

These are internationally sanctioned titles, Roy, I don't have the authority to hand the belts over by forfeit and I am not jeopardizing a working agreement to do that. Besides I don't have any physical belts to hand you even if I did.

The Punch Line huddles together, whispering to one another, Harv looks up and gives Womack a stink eye before returning to the huddle. Womack sighs impatiently.

ROY VEZINA

Dukey, baby. A forfeit is a forfeit. The so called champs lost so those belong to us, as we stand here in the name of all of Canada and to the lord himself, Gordie.

All three do the Gordie Elbow taunt.

DUKE WOMACK

Actually boys, I do know a team that is here and hasn't competed...

Vezina turns and looks at this teammates, who look a little worried. Womack coughs into the microphone and then mutters, motioning for everyone to follow him backstage. In a unique look, the camera crew and the Punch Line both tag along as Womack storms backstage looking for this team. Womack approaches a door that has a hockey stick propped underneath the door handle, to which Duke looks at the Punch Line unimpressed. He Sparta's the stick and opens the door, the duo of Jeremy Squire and Crazy Boy blow past him and begin trading hands with the Punch Line! Jin Hirai can be seen in the background dying to get into it, but medics restraining him. Womack and the security get things cooled down.

ROY VEZINA

Uncrowned tag team champions, Duke! We're the best!

HARV NORRIS & RICK HULL

THE BEST!

Womack motions for them to be taken away as they begin singing "We are the Champions!" while Womack chats up Squire and Crazy, inaudibly.

AJ Knight defends vs. Chupacabra Jr

We've got champion's choice at play here with AJ Knight opting to have his semi final match first. Whoever walks out of this contest as the champion is going to have a rest whereas Matt Pulver or MEZA will not.

BRIAN SHELZI
Rest isn't always what it's cracked up to be though, Sambo, I wish more fighters recognized that. Momentum is very important.

The bell sounds and we get ourselves an interesting visual as AJ Knight stands almost an entire foot taller than his challenger, Chupacabra Jr. Not put off by the height difference, Chupa offers his hand out of respect and AJ quickly shakes before the two lock-up. The champion quickly grabs the arm and wrings it hard, but Chupa rolls forward, pops up and tries to counter but AJ clobbers the Puerto Rican with a European uppercut! Chupa falls back against the ropes, AJ grabs him and tries to Irish whip him across the ring but the challenger counters and leaps up, trying to drive his knees into AJ's chest. The champion catches him and sits him on the top turnbuckle, patting his chest before Chupa responds with a boot to the face! AJ stumbles away and Chupacabra Jr leaps off with a missile dropkick that sends AJ reeling into the opposite corner! Chupa slowly gets back up...

LARIAT FROM AJ!

BRIAN SHELZI
Whew! How many times did that little guy spin through the air!? Imagine if El Cerdo Mostaza did that!

AJ shakes off the effects of the missile dropkick as referee Gideon Dube checks Chupacabra Jr to make sure he's still able to continue. After being convinced, Dube backs off and lets Chupa get back to his feet. The champion comes over to greet him and clamps on a front chancery, then lifts Chupacabra straight up into the air and snaps him back down with a suplex! AJ rolls over and covers!

1-NO!

AJ chuckles as Dube holds up a single finger, the crowd oohs at the heart and maybe unintelligent choice of Chupacabra Jr to kick out immediately. AJ pulls him up to his feet and scoops him right up, then shows off his "power' a little bit by parading around the ring.

CHUPA SLIPS OUT!

AJ gets shoved back into the corner from the earlier dropkick. Chupa charges in, but is bandera'd up and over the ropes onto the apron where he manages to land safely. AJ turns around to see where he went and eats a kick upside the head and puts him back in the corner! Chupa climbs up the turnbuckles behind AJ and... tijeras! He headscissors AJ across the ring! The crowd eats it up! The champion stumbles and staggers, finding refuge in the opposite corner. Chupa gets up again and charges in, leaping onto the second then third rope...

HURACAN-NO!

AJ powers him back up, looking to increase the impact of the powerbomb...

CHUPA PUNCHES!

Dube warns him about the closed fists, but his work is done! AJ releases enough that Chupa manages to DDT him into the mat from that position! The crowd is hot! Chupacabra is down! The champion is out! The challenger shakes his head out, rolls onto his side and crawls on top...

KICK OUT!

Chupa goes a couple feet off the kick out and scrambles back to his feet, hoping to time his next move perfectly! He waits patiently, stalking AJ as he gets up dazed... Chupa leaps onto the top rope...

QUEBR-NO ONE HOME!

Chupa lands on his feet, but AJ hoofs him in the gut...

DDT!

AJ sits dazed for a moment, then rolls Chupa onto his back.

AJ Knight banks two defenses and is heading to the final! A short, but explosive bout between these two.

Look, man, Chupacabra Jr fought like hell but so much of AJ Knight's style is defense. Add to the fact that you're a high-flyer, undersized and fighting your second of two matches in one night... you're beat up. It's a tough go and AJ Knight shows why he's a multiple time champion - he stayed cool, calm and collected and he's going to the finals pretty fresh, I'd say.

Knight gets up and hastily shakes Chupa's hand as he's down, leaving the ring and grabbing his belt. He gets into the camera and smiles, holding up two fingers and says "One more!" as we go to break.

Semi Final

Matt Pulver vs. MEZA

1 Fall - 15 Minute Time Limit

Both men have their back to one another as the bell sounds, Matt Pulver puts his head against the top turnbuckle and turns around while MEZA looks upwards before advancing to the centre of the ring. MEZA offers a handshake and Pulver is hesitant, but opts to shake - MEZA nods and the two circle about.

SAM HEWITT

Unlike last year's bout between these two, the most notable differences is that Matt Pulver is probably the most banged up heading into this. He passed the concussion protocol, but was noticeably wobbled by two Sangre de Pollo kicks in his first round bout. Whereas MEZA's worst setback was a bite to his thigh courtesy of Azalo. In contrast to last year's final where MEZA came into the match with a bad arm that Pulver, then Pollo Dorado II picked apart and used to score the win by hammerlock. Of course, Pulver doesn't have the Pollo Dorado II mask to hinder him physically or mentally... so it should be an interesting contest.

A lock-up ends with Pulver behind MEZA, the two men jockey for position with MEZA coming out of it with a hammerlock. Pulver fakes a back elbow smash and tries to side headlock MEZA, but still has his left arm restrained by the hammerlock. MEZA releases the hammerlock to wring the right arm, but Pulver goes with the momentum and arm drags MEZA across the ring to some oohs from the crowd. MEZA can't help but smirk as he gets back up and the two men circle around again, MEZA shoots in with a lucha-style takedown and torques on the leg, but Pulver pulls MEZA down by the head and drapes his free leg over top. Free of the leg lock, Pulver grasps the arm and tries for a cross armbreaker! MEZA keeps his cool, rolling onto his side and then putting Pulver on his stomach. MEZA pulls his arms free and criss-crosses the legs of Pulver, clutching them with his left arm and reaching over with his right to crank back on the head. Pulver easily reaches the ropes, but the first bit of animosity between the two in the bout comes as MEZA releases and yanks him away, clutching him in a front chancery... or tries to, Pulver rolls through and comes out in the advantageous position with a front chancery of his own. Pulver drags him back to his feet...

HALF HATCH SUPLEX!

Pulver floats over for a cover, scoring a two count. Pulver tries to clamp on a hammerlock, but MEZA rolls through and gets to the ropes. It's Pulver's turn to show some animosity, as he grabs MEZA's leg and yanks him away from the ropes. Pulver wisely keeps his left leg on MEZA's free leg, preventing any upkicks as he clutches the left leg, steps off and turns MEZA over into a single leg crab! The crowd roars, having already seen one tapout this evening as a result of this hold.

BRIAN SHELZI

Both AJ Knight, who won with this hold earlier and Matt Pulver had some time under the learning tree of Ben Chrenshaw who was very proficient in utilizing this hold. Of course, their respective time under him is a lot different. AJ was an ally while Pulver was a rival, but it's very clear the two have taken a lot from the Crippler's teachings.

Indeed, MEZA gets up on his elbows and tries to use his knee to scoot closer to the ropes. Pulver initially sits back, forcing MEZA down to the mat but quickly changes and plants a knee on the lower back, then gradually slides it higher... cranking at an unnatural angle...

BREAK!

MEZA gets to the ropes and Pulver releases without issue. The two men get up, MEZA a bit slower and circle about but never taking their eyes off one another. They lock-up, Pulver tries to pull an arm but gets hip tossed. MEZA hits the ropes for a follow up attack, but Pulver succeeds in tripping him with a drop down! MEZA rolls through and Pulver charges him, but MEZA bodies him with a shoulder block! With Pulver down, MEZA springs off the second rope for the Coffin Splash and hits...

CRUCIFIX HOLD!

3-NO!

Pulver's trickery almost got MEZA, but the New Mexico native stays alive for a few moments more in the tournament. Pulver wraps MEZA's legs around his own right leg, then grabs MEZA's arms in a double underhook, or butterfly lock then rolls sideways, hanging MEZA upside down in a submission hold that looks downright agonizing! With nowhere to go, MEZA's only choice is to try and use momentum to rock his body back and forth...

IT WORKS!

MEZA gets freed, Pulver has to slink away as MEZA recovers, checking out his limbs. Pulver rushes him as he tries to seek refuge in the corner, but MEZA moves out of the way. Pulver hits the turnbuckles and MEZA grabs him, Irish whipping him into the opposite corner. MEZA charges in, seeking a Superman elbow but Pulver dashes out from harm's way. MEZA manages to catch himself somewhat but isn't prepared for the elbow strikes from Pulver, who then lifts MEZA up onto the top turnbuckle. A few more elbow strikes find their mark as Pulver climbs up and sits atop MEZA's shoulders, then dives forward...

VICTORY ROLL!

3-NO!

Pulver immediately pops up and double stomps MEZA! The audible oof can be heard being sucked out of MEZA's lungs as he rolls over onto his stomach in pain, Pulver grabs him in a rear waist hold and yanks him to his feet... then charges him into the ropes. An O'Connor roll follows!

2-KICK OUT!

MEZA immediately rolls out of the ring as Pulver catches himself on the ropes. The fans get excited as Pulver shoots a look at the scene before him, but seemingly decides against it. MEZA grabs the guardrail as he falls to his knees, gasping for air. He climbs back to his feet and turns around...

SOMERSAULT PLANCHA OFF THE APRON!

Pulver gets all of it! He rolls off and seemingly takes a moment to count his blessings that he's not messed up, he grabs MEZA up which proves to be harder than he anticipated. He plops the youngster on the ring apron and uses all his might to shove him under the bottom rope. Pulver gets in behind him and grabs MEZA's arms, crossing them over and putting his leg in...

SOL NACIENTE - THE PULVERIZER!

Pulver rolls forward, but MEZA drops his weight down on Matt's upper body and keeps his hands locked on Pulver's wrists!

The two men struggle to free up their limbs, Pulver rolls onto his stomach...

MEZA WITH THE TEMPLAR STRETCH!

The crowd eats this up!

AJ Knight's signature submission hold, the Templar Stretch... the move that unmasked Pollo Dorado II!

MEZA is no AJ Knight when it comes to the hold though and Pulver manages roll onto his side and basically small package MEZA!

The kickout has the fans in disbelief! There's a skirmish again to get the limbs free and they both get back to their feet. MEZA tries to rush with the Superman elbow, but Pulver drops to a knee and avoids it. He twirls around... rolling elb--

MEZA LEAPS UP...

CRUCIFIX THE ARMS!

THEY CRASH TO THE MAT - HUMBLE BEGINNINGS!

The bell sounds and the fans cheer loudly! MEZA lays on the mat looking up at the ceiling with tears welling up in his eyes while Matt Pulver looks around briefly, then smiles. He rolls over to MEZA and grabs his face, telling him something our microphones don't pick up. Pulver backs up to his feet and extends his hand, MEZA grabs it and the Swede pulls the youngster to his feet and into a hug.

SAM HEWITT

There's some sportsmanship! These two men just went to war in a game of mental chess on the mat and here's Matt Pulver raising MEZA's arm in victory!

MEZA drops to his knee, still emotional about the big win but "Me Against the World" by Simple Plan hits as AJ Knight interrupts the proceedings.

We return from break and Super Pollo is inside the ring with Mason Marvelle and the two finalists.

SUPER POLLO

It is tonight here in Thunder Bay, Ontario that reigning champion AJ Knight looks to make his fourth defense of the World's Cruiserweight Championship. Across the ring from him is his challenger, MEZA, who looks to end this reign at one hundred and five days. Tonight, these two men are not only vying for the highest honour in all of Pollo Road but also for the right to be the winner of the 2023 Hijo Invitational - may the best fighter win!

Soup nods in both fighter's direction before leaving.

MASON MARVELLE

Your main event for this evening is the finals of the 2023 Hijo Invitational! And it is for the Pollomania Lucha Libre Cruiserweight Championship! It is to be fought over a thirty minute limit with one fall, one submission or a knockout to decide the winner!

Lots of energy, especially with the arrival of all the eliminated competitors at ringside.

MASON MARVELLE

Introducing first from Las Vegas, New Mexico! He weighed in this morning at one hundred and seventy seven pounds! He is the challenger! He is MEZA!

MEZA gets a lot of love, but you can tell in his body language that he's running on fumes.

MASON MARVELLE
His opponent from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania! He weighed in this morning at two hundred and twenty five pounds! He is the current, reigning and defending Pollomania Lucha Libre Cruiserweight Champion of the World! He is A! J! KNIGHT!

Knight steps forward, raising the title high.

MASON MARVELLE
Your referee for this bout is Tubby Thomas!

Mandatory "Tubby!" call from the fans as both men do their last bit of loosening up. MEZA swigs a water bottle and chucks it aside, trying to calm his nerves down while Knight looks at MEZA to make sure he's paying attention and tells the ring attendant to give the belt back in a "couple minutes". The bell sounds and the fans roar in approval! Both men slowly emerge from the corner, but AJ slinks in and gets the rear waist hold on the go behind. He toys with MEZA some, stepping left and stepping right trying to psyche him out. MEZA bulls backwards and the two tumble out of the ring, the fighters on the outside parting the sea for the two finalists. AJ gets up, but immediately falls back down to a knee. MEZA grabs the guardrail and tries to pull himself to his feet, but AJ grabs him and knees him in the midsection. He throws his arm over...

SNAP SUPLEX ON THE FLOOR!

The crowd oohs as MEZA sits up, his back straightened up and his face full of hurt. AJ gets up, still frustrated by whatever happened during the bad spill to the outside. He grabs MEZA and forces him to his feet, chucking him against the apron before rolling in himself. MEZA crumples back to the floor and AJ sighs and rolls back out, lifting MEZA up onto the apron and shoving him back inside.

SAM HEWITT

Some class being shown by the champion not wanting to win by knockout, but the suplex on the floor maybe not so classy.

BRIAN SHELZI

Look, AJ clearly got hurt by MEZA's reckless defense of a simple rear waist hold. I'd be a little miffed too.

SAM HEWITT

The kid's tired, he just fought a thirteen minute match against Matt Pulver!

AJ grabs MEZA up off the mat and drives him back first into the corner turnbuckles, then straightens him up with an elbow strike to the jaw/neck! A second, then a third! AJ uses his left hand to push MEZA's face backwards and delivers a fourth, then turns around and yells to Matt Pulver... "This is how you do a rolling elbow!" and goes to do it... but MEZA falls! AJ isn't impressed and goes to grab MEZA, who clutches on AJ's waistband and launches him forward. AJ hits the top rope, essentially headbutting it and falls to his knees. Thomas checks on him, as does Dr. Pierson for any whiplash effects but AJ seems to indicate he's OK although he's slow to get up. MEZA slowly tries to get back to his feet, clutching the ropes as a guide... he grabs AJ and tries to apply a front chancery but AJ again drives him back first into the turnbuckles! MEZA falls on his knees as AJ backs off, still sorting out his head after bouncing off the ropes. The champion turns back around and grabs hold of MEZA's head and...

DDT-NO!

AJ falls down, but MEZA hangs on! MEZA grabs AJ up, applying a waist hold but gets quickly countered. AJ shoves him off into the ropes, MEZA bounces off and AJ cuts him off with a lariat! Knight turns and looks at the five eliminated fighters (no Sangre) at ringside before he yanks MEZA to his feet, grabs a front chancery...

DDT!

Knight stares directly at Pulver before rolling MEZA over just as he did Chupacabra Jr.

FOOT ON THE ROPE!

AJ yanks it down and covers again!

... FOOT ON THE ROPE!

Thomas tells him to get up and move away from the ropes while Darkness Tigre tries to start shit, telling Thomas that Pulver put his foot on the ropes! Thomas asks Pulver who denies it, the fans corroborate his claim. A quick replay shows no funny business occurred although AJ seems to know better than for Pulver to do that. Knight instead focuses on the task at hand, pulling MEZA up and trying for the Knightfall but MEZA drops to his knees...

POWERS UP!

AJ releases the hammerlock as MEZA has him in a bad position...

PENDULUM SPINEBUSTER!

SAM HEWITT

Pick Up and Delivery!

MEZA falls back, too exhausted to follow up. Pulver, Hirai and Chupacabra Jr all slap the mat, cheering on MEZA just as the fans are.

BRIAN SHELZI

We've seen MEZA follow up the spinebuster with a submission hold, but that clearly took a ton out of him because he is back on the mat and we just might have a double knockout! It'd be a draw, AJ gets his defense!

SAM HEWITT

You think he'd be happy with a technicality?

BRIAN SHELZI

Would you care?!

Both men struggle back to their feet, but MEZA spins and clocks AJ with a backfist! The champion reels back down to a knee and crawls to the ropes for safety... MEZA has fallen on his own knees, but sees a situation in front of him...

TIGER FEINT KICK!

I am not going to Google the Las Vegas, New Mexico area code but he dialed it up! AJ is sent flying back into the centre of the ring and MEZA is once again struggling to find his bearings after a big move. Knight gets back up, but falls backwards against the ropes - landing in a seated position near the edge. This is important as MEZA gets up...

HESITATION DROPKICK!

AJ goes back out to the floor in another spill! MEZA rolls onto his stomach, getting away from the ropes as Dr. Pierson's asking about AJ's condition begin being echoed by Azalo. Knight shoves the doctor away as MEZA exits to the apron, he runs across and leaps onto the second rope...

COFFIN SPLASH!

AJ MOVES! BUT TIGRE, AZALO AND HIRAI ALL EAT IT!

MEZA rolls off, but gets rushed by AJ and basically shoulder blocked into the guardrail. AJ grabs the challenger and shoves him inside the ring, grabbing the middle rope and climbing in after him. MEZA tries to crawl away but AJ stomps on him, a direct hit on the shoulder blade. AJ stands over top of MEZA and flattens him out with a hip drop. He transitions, trying to apply the Templar Stretch, all the while telling MEZA exactly what he did wrong.

BRIAN SHELZI

That's why he's a champion, Sambo, he's coaching the kid through a defeat!

MEZA gets trapped in the hold! AJ cranks back, but gives too much. He keeps a hold of it, but tries to take a breather...

MEZA SWEEPS HIM!

2-NO!

SAM HEWITT

Look at that! AJ Knight typically doesn't kick out right away, but he wasn't taking any chances on that one!

Pulver slaps the mat as both men separate. MEZA grabs the turnbuckle pad and pulls himself up, while AJ is still on his elbows. MEZA seemingly contemplates removing the pad, but sees AJ on all fours...

It clicks.

He grabs the arm, steps over and dives forward...

LA MAGISTRAL!

The place pops loud! AJ kicks out of the pin too late as MEZA is mauled by the faces at ringside... well, Pulver and Chupa. The other eliminated fighters are still down. AJ Knight crawls away to the corner in defeat, taking a seat as he watches the scene unfold in front of him.

SAM HEWITT

AJ Knight should be proud of himself win or lose, he defended a title twice in one night and still put in a valiant effort in defeat.

BRIAN SHELZI

You compare him to the Cruelty's, the Edwards' - they both lost their title in the finals too... but the difference is, those tournaments were fought over WEEKS not one single night. AJ Knight deserves all the credit in the world for what he accomplished.

The crowd pops even louder, but the stream of confetti and bodies doesn't allow the camera to pick up who's coming down the aisle. The other eliminated fighters are starting to get up as the picture becomes clear...

LYNX IS BACK!

Lynx doesn't wait for MEZA to get up, he dives on his student and hugs him tight. Super Pollo and the attendants get in the ring with the trophy and novelty cheque while AJ Knight snatches the belt away from one of them. Pulver takes notice and tries to intervene, but AJ gets up and tells him to "shut the fuck up" as he walks over to MEZA. AJ and MEZA share a long look, AJ looks at the belt and drops it into MEZA's possession - telling him he's going to go enjoy some real food now. Pulver smirks as AJ leaves and helps Lynx hoist MEZA to his feet. Once steady, Pulver pats MEZA on the chest and leaves... even as Lynx calls to him. Lynx shrugs, then poses with pictures with an emotionally and physically spent MEZA - all smiles though.
