Susan Newton's basement
10/09/2023
Orville is lying on his futon, tucked into the corner of his mother's basement - just like he's done every day for the past week. Ever since Dangerous Road, has spent most of his time lying in his futon. He hasn't read any comic books, he hasn't played any 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons with his online group, and he most certainly hasn't done any training. Of course, he has still had wrestling playing on his TV at all times, but even then he's only been able to watch a few hours at a time.
At the Masked League, he had scored his first no-ring victory. Everything seemed to finally look up for him. Then the momentum continued at the Pollo Bucket Anniversary Show when he was on the winning team. With the help of Matt Pulver, the dream he's been working towards fulfilling his entire life finally started to come to fruition.
Then everything changed.
At Dangerous Road he lost. That usually wouldn't be the end of the world. He's been a loser his entire life - he's gotten used to losing. But this time he really believed that things were going to be different now.
A knock on the door interrupts his thoughts.
"Orvie-hun - just wanted to tell you that I'm home from work now."
Susan Newton peeks her head through the door at the top of the stairs.
"I got you some trail mix if you're hungry before dinner. I'll be off to yoga class in a minute, so tell me if you want a ride anywhere, okay honey?"
Orville doesn't move his eyes from the ceiling.
"Uh-huh."
She's about to close the door, but stops herself.
"Oh and you got some mail today."
She puts an envelope at the top of the stairs, before closing the door. Orville's curiosity gets the better of him and eventually he forces himself to get up and grab the envelope.
Inside the envelope is a letter - from Matt Pulver.
After his identity was revealed, Matt Pulver decided to go back to El Chiflado's ranch in Bolivia. He and Orville had one talk after the show, and then - he was gone. Orville hasn't heard from him since. And now he's been reinstated by Duke Womack, and will even have his own celebratory show. And Orville still hasn't heard from him. Until now.
"Dear Orville,
I'm sorry for not writing to you earlier. I've had a lot to process the past month, and I thought I knew the best way to do that. It turns out that I didn't.
It wasn't long after I arrived here in the Andes again that I realized that it's not where I'm supposed to be right now. I thought this was where I belonged now. But I realized that I already have a home.
I don't know when this letter will reach you (it can take some time to get mail sent away from here), so I don't know if you've heard the news, but I've been reinstated and will be coming back to Pollo Road very soon. I'm not sure exactly when I'll leave here, but I'll let you know as soon as I get to a place with internet connection - or cell phone service.
Until then, there is something I want to give you.
Again, I don't know when this letter will reach you, but I'm hoping I get to be the one to tell you this.
I'm going to book a show next month. And I'm giving you a rematch against AJ Knight.
I couldn't make it for the title, but I could make it Heritage Rules. I know you doubt yourself, but I also know that you're ready for this.
I believe in you.
Sinc See you soon,
Matt Pulver"
Dressed in her favorite yoga pants and her duffle bag over her shoulder, Susan Newton is about to head out - when the door to the basement opens.
"Mom..."
Orville is standing in the doorway, with a duffle bag of his own.
"Can you drop me off at the gym? I've got some training to do."
