Six months ago.
Darkness. A small band of soldiers make their way up to the front door of the building. The leader pauses and holds up a hand. He pulls out his handheld radio and speaks into it.
“Blue Leader, Black Leader, are you in position? Come in.”
“This is Blue Leader. Affirmative, Red Leader, we are in position.”
“Black Leader here. In position, Boss, and ready to go whenever you are.”
Red Leader frowned but decided not to chastise Black Leader. Now was not the time. Not when they were so close to fulfilling their mission. He took a look back at his one squad and received nods of approval from them. Lifting the radio up to his mouth he gave his order.
“Alright. We go in on the count of three. One, two, three!”
A battering ram was brought forward and the front door to the building was quickly broken down. Quickly, but as silent as possible, the members of Red Squadron entered and spread out to secure the area. Room by room was searched and secured until met up with the members of Black and Blue Squadrons, their captains saluting Red Leader as he approached.
“All’s clear on the west side of the building, sir.”
“Same on the east side, Boss. The whole building is strangely quiet.”
“Agreed.”
Red Leader turned to his second in command, a woman in a red luchadora mask. She grinned at him in that annoying way that drove him crazy.
“You worry too much, H. Tenemos esto, hermano.”
Red Leader couldn’t help but laugh at his sister’s optimism. He turned back to the leaders of the other squads and gave them their orders.
“Black Squadron hold the main floor. Blue Squadron, I want you to go check the second floor. I’ll take Red Squadron down into the basement. We know our target is in the building. We might not get another shot at him so if you spot him do not hesitate to take the target down immediately. Understood?”
The squad leaders didn’t need any further instruction. They knew just as well as he did how vital this mission was.
Red Leader lead his squad downstairs. Immediately, they spread out and checked each room, one by one, while their leader stood in the center of the basement, looking around. He didn’t like this, it was way too quiet.
Despite his concerns, Red Leader heard himself shout out, “Squadron, report!”
“Nothing, sir!”
“All clear, sir!”
“Nothing but a bunch of empty boxes and cobwebs, sir!”
Once again, he felt himself turn to his second in command, barely managing to hide how tense he is.
“I don’t like it. It’s too quiet.”
“Way too quiet, H,” she replied, “Could we have been wrong? Maybe the viejo diabólico pulled a fast one on us and took off before we got here.”
“No,” he heard himself say as he looked back towards the stairs to the main floor, “We’ve had eyes on here since the moment he entered. If he left we would have known about it.”
Pulling out his radio, he called to the other squadrons.
“Blue Squadron, come in!”
There was nothing but static. Red Leader leader felt his anxiety increasing.”
“Black Squadron, come in!”
Static.
“Dammit! Joe, Victor, come in!”
More static
He put his radio away and signaled for the rest of his squadron to join him.
“Ladies and gentlemen, it appears this little search and destroy mission has turned into a rescue mission. We have lost contact with both Black Squadron and Blue Squadron, and while I would love to presume we’re simply having communication issues, I suspect we’ve walked into a trap. I want everyone fully armed and ready to go.”
Red Leader turned to head for the staircase, when his arm was grabbed and turned to face his second in command.
“This is bad, H. I told you he was el diablo.”
He pulled her in and gave her a quick hug before adjusting his own red mask, edged with tiger stripes.
“I know, Sunfire,” Red Tiger King assured her, “but what does the bible say? ‘Resistid al diablo, y huirá de vosotros.’ ‘Resist the devil and he will flee from you.’””
He reach up and rubbed the top of her head, before turning to the others and barking out his order.
“Okay people! Let’s move!”
