Ring. Ring.
Half asleep and feeling groggy, Red Tiger King lifts his head from his pillow and loos over at the time at the time. 3:37 am. Who could be calling at this hour?
RTK looks over his shoulder and turns to make sure his girlfriend is still sleeping. Relieved that she is, he turns back to his nightstand and picks up his phone. He checks to see who it is, but the number is blocked. For a moment he considers not answering, but something about this feels odd. Silently, he slips out of bed and quietly leaves the bedroom. Only then does he finally answer the phone.
“Hello?”
“Hola, gran hermano.”
A chill went down his back. He knew that voice.
“Maria? What are you doing calling me at this hour?”
The voice on the other line laughed.
“Qué ocurre? I thought you would be happy to hear from me, H.”
Red Tiger King quickly glanced into the bedroom to make sure his girlfriend was still asleep and gently shut the door. He headed to the living room, cursing under his breath.
“I am happy to hear from you, Maria. It’s just, we haven’t talked since…”
“Nos enfrentamos al diablo? Yeah, we really got our asses handed to us, didn’t we?”
Maria laughs, but RTK can hear the bitterness in her voice. Memories he fought to forget came flooding back in. He sunk down on the couch and sighed.
“Yeah, we certainly did.”
He heard Maria laugh again. The sound irritated him for some reason.
“Why are you calling me, Maria? Why now?”
“Qué? Can’t I call my favourite brother every once in a while and check in on him?”
“At 3:30 in the morning?”
“Te necesitamos, hermano. Vamos a volver.”
RTK shivered and looked around.
“What are you talking about? We all made a vow never to go back there. It’s suicide.”
“O para ti y para mí, mucho peor. And yet we gotta do it. You know that, H. If we don’t stop him, no one will.”
“Maria, I can’t!”
He was shaking now and found he could barely hold the phone to his ear.
On the other end of the line, Maria laughed again. This time it sounded sad.
“So what, you gonna just keep wrestling and forget about the rest of us, tu familia? What do you think that estúpido, Ojimi, would say if he knew the real reason why your slumming around in shitholes like Pollo Road?
“Shut the fuck up, Maria.”
RTK could barely contain his anger. How dare she talk to him like this? He almost hung up on here then and there, but she managed to cut through his rage, her words soft and calm.
“Face it, H, you’re broken and none of us blame you for that after what that demonio did all of us, but you can’t hide from this forever.”
Silence, he couldn’t think of anything to say. He heard Maria sigh on the other end of the line, sadness and disappointment in her tone.
“Veo como es.”
“Maria, I need this. This place, it’s important to me.”
“I know, H. I know. Say hi to Lucky for me, okay? That chick is way too good for you.”
Despite her not being here, RTK found himself nodding his head. Tears were beginning to roll down his face.
“Yeah, I will.”
“And good luck against Kid Loco.”
“Crazy Boy.”
“Same shit.”
She laughed and this time he joined along with her. It felt good, he really did miss her sometimes.
“Te amo, hermano.”
“Te amo, hermanita.”
Maria hung up and RTK sat there looking at his phone. She was right, he knew she was. He couldn’t hide from his demons forever.
Especially when he was running around in the house the beast built.
