Two Weeks Ago
Should I or shouldn’t I…
That was all that could run through AJ’s mind as he sits on the set of Drive Thru. Should he tell the world the true identity of their hero “Pollo Dorado II”, or let it slide.
Decisions, decisions.
Frankly, it had been killing him since HIJO. Having a secret nobody else knew and not being able to gloat about it was tough for an egomaniac like him. Nobody else seemed to have figured it out yet. Except Orville Newton. Kid studied tape religiously and started wrestling suspiciously like Dorado.
That freaking nerd is smarter than he looks. Of course “Dorado” didn’t exactly make it that hard.
AJ shook hands with Sam Hewitt, a little small talk, going over the content of the interview. Among the subjects: His rematch with Pollo Dorado II
Now I have to make the choice…. He made his… I know that much.
The first couple of questions pass by. Questions surrounding his alliance with David Troy. Looking at Sam Hewitt he couldn’t help but notice how badly his hairline had receded. The years had changed him quite a bit. Sam looked so much older than he did when he met him 5 years ago. So many things had. Most surprisingly he was now friends with David Troy which back then seemed almost impossible. Everything was totally different from back then… Except for him. Even thinking about it still made AJ furious. He could feel his hands tightly gripping the arms of the chair…
Calm down. Take a breath. Don’t break character… Act like nothing’s going on…
It was always said that acting is the grandest lie. With how much “Dorado” always hated to lie it was no surprise he was an awful actor. Before they’d even locked up, he made it obvious, the posture, the look in his eyes as he studied AJ’s stance, methodically searching for any opening in his posture. The way only one other man had before. The match only further confirmed his suspicions. Like he knew every move AJ was going to do and how he was going to do it. Not like a rookie at all. But then he did it… He gave away the act completely.
He refused to shake AJ’s hand. The heir of the Pollo family would have no reason to decline a handshake from their top star. None at all.
The idiot broke character. He lifted the mask, and I’m the only one to see it. Just like old times…
Now the interview turned to the title match. “Dorado”, the Cruiserweight title. The rematch. Time to make a choice.
I’m going to do it… I’m going to tell everybody the truth about him! Let’s see if he can look down on me when I pull the moral high ground out from under him.
“I was preparing for a Pollo. I should have been preparing for somebody else entirely.”
Sam looked perplexed. He’d heard the rumors. Everybody had. That “Dorado” wasn’t a real Pollo. But they were just rumors. Senseless conspiracy theories, certainly not to be repeated on air. Sam looked afraid. It was almost justified. After all, this was hardly the first time AJ had gotten an interviewer in big trouble with corporate.
“This time I’m not only going to beat him. I’m going to pul-”
No wait… Why make it that easy on him? It’s got to be killing him to be lying to everybody. Even more so knowing I of all people know for sure. Now’s the chance to expose him to everybody once and for all… Let the people know they’re being lied to. I’ll let that ugly feeling fester. At a fever pitch I’ll unveil the face of the man who deceived them. It’s the kind of scandal that wrecked Jason Orion… What will it do to him I wonder?
“-ah nevermind.”
Sam seems conflicted now. Like he almost doesn’t want to ask the next question. But the interview needs to go on.
One more line. Just to make sure he knows I know.
“This above all: To thine own self be true. And it must follow as the night does the day, that you cannot then be false to any man.”
As AJ left the set euphoria washed over him.
A false name, a false identity, and a false face, to hide a false man. I’ll stay true though. You want to play superhero? Then, I’ll be your villain. But I won’t break character…
